　どうしてかくも五輪に対する興味が失われてしまったのか。ホスト国は選手や関係者に無償で食事や宿泊施設を提供しているのに「食事がまずい」などとクレームを付けられる、国の名誉や個人の利益のために手段を選ばない選手や審判がいる、平和の祭典と称される五輪期間中は戦争をストップするという古代ギリシャからの慣例を壊そうとする、マスコットの人気が出すぎて逆にメディアから攻撃されるといった事柄が、五輪をつまらなくしてしまっているのだ。
　そして、五輪自身も確かに変質してしまった。昨年の東京五輪開催時、国際オリンピック委員会（IOC）の幹部は１泊200〜300万円のホテルに宿泊する一方、アスリートたちは段ボールベッドで睡眠を取った。一体誰のための五輪なのか。五輪はもはや私服を肥やすためのビジネスツールに成り下がっていて、誰も監督管理しないどころかその傾向を助長する者までいる。その結果、五輪は先のない袋小路に追いやられてしまった。
　中国は五輪を開催する実力を示したが、さすがに一国の力だけで五輪を本来の道に戻すことは不可能だ。ただ、だからといって悲観的になる必要はない。五輪が変質してしまっても、真の五輪精神が消滅することはないはずだから。」
