＜G・クラーク『ユニークな日本人』を読む（その32）＞（2025.2.7公開）

　「・・・知的なもの、抽象的なものにこだわることを、英語ではインテレクチュアル（intellectual）といいます。
　インテリジェント（intelligent）とはちがって、これは必ずしもいい意味ではありません。・・・

⇒などという話は私は寡聞にして知りません。
　intellectualの意味（注31）にそんな悪い含意はないのであって、その点ではintelligentの意味（注32）と同様です。

　日本滞在歴の長いクラークは、インテリ（語源はインテレクチュアルに相当するロシア語のインテリゲンツィヤ）という日本語に「単に高学歴であるというだけで人生経験が浅く自律性に欠けるといった意味に使われるケースもある」

ことに引きずられて、英語のintellectualの意味を捉えるに至っているのではないでしょうか。（太田）

　欧米人に聞くと、われわれは個人主義だから……であるという結果をいいますが、初めは、抽象的なもの、原則的なものを重視したことにあるのです。

⇒くどいようですが、イギリス以外の地理的意味での欧米社会は「個人主義」社会ではありません！（太田）

　その結果として抽象的なグループ観念をもつようになった。
　すると、近くの人をあまり気にしなくても生きてゆける。
　それで個人主義的になった。
　それで淋しくなるから、なにかアイデンティティを求めるようになった。
　英語でアイデンティティ（identity）＜（注33）＞という言い方がよくつかわれます。

　（注33）a person’s name and other facts about who they are＜/＞the fact of being, or feeling that you are, a particular type of person, organization, etc.; the qualities that make a person, organization, etc. different from others

　つまり存在する意味、意義、理由……＜といった具合に、＞・・・非常に訳しにくい。
　「生きがい」に近いような……。」（87～88）

⇒「注33」から分かるように、父某と母某の子、とか、名前が〇△、というのがidentityの一番目の意味であり、他人と異なっているところの固有の人格、というのが二番目の意味であるところ、日本語でidentityに相当する単語がないのは、欧米では、人々が二番目の意味のidentityは時と場所を超えて不変であると思い込んでいるのに対し、日本では、人間（じんかん）で相互に影響を与え合うことによって、「それ」がTPOに応じてどんどん変わっていくことを知っているためである、というのが私の考えです。
　（良く考えてみれば、養子になれば父母だって変わりますし、そもそも、名前だって改名できます！）
