ピアノソナタ
（「フランツ・リストが作曲した唯一のピアノソナタであり、彼の最高傑作のひとつである。また単にリストの代表作という以上に、ロマン派を代表する重要なピアノ曲のひとつでもある。1853年に作曲され、ロベルト・シューマンに献呈された。
　この作品が発表された当時、この曲があまりにも独創的で、しかも革新的なものであったため意見は賛否に真っ二つに分かれ長い間激論の中にあった。歴史上この曲ほど論争を巻き起こした曲はないとさえ言われる。シューマンの妻でヴィルトゥオーサピアニストのクララ・シューマンは1854年5月25日の自分の日記に「ただ目的もない騒音にすぎない。健全な着想などどこにも見られないし、すべてが混乱していて明確な和声進行はひとつとして見出せない。そうはいっても、彼にその作品のお礼を言わないわけにはいかない。それはまったく大儀なことだ。」と苛立ちの気持ちを書き残した。」
